What is the Specialist high Skill Major Sports program?
A Specialist High Skills Major in Sports enables students to customize their high school experience to suit their interests and talents, to meet the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma, and to prepare for a successful post-secondary transition to apprenticeship training, college, university or employment in the Sports sectors. An SHSM enables students to gain sector-identified preparatory skills and knowledge, and to make more informed career decisions.

What are the future career paths for Sports Majors?

For Sports Majors, possible careers include:

  • Apprenticeship – event planner
  • College – broadcaster, recreation facility manager, sports journalist, fitness director
  • University – sports agent, marketing/communications manager, kinesiologist, teacher, athletic therapist, nutritionist, sports author, sports psychologist, sports public relations
  • Entry level workplace – recreation facilities worker, equipment manager, athlete, coach, fitness instructor, lifeguard, personal trainer, sports guide, retailer, sports attendant
Grades 9 and 10 are exploratory years with no course requirements. PPL1O (Healthy Active Living) is strongly recommended. In grade 10 one of PPL2O (Healthy Active Living), PAF2O (Live Fit/Power Fit) is encouraged. These courses offer a foundation for several areas within the SHSM Sports program.
