Yesterday, we learned of a very concerning incident that occurred at Eastwood Collegiate Institute in Kitchener. At this point, it is alleged that one group of students burned, then trampled a Pride Flag, finally throwing it at a group of students who identify as members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. Waterloo Regional Police Service is investigating this as a hate-motivated incident.

While we cannot comment on an ongoing police investigation, Director of Education jeewan chanicka wanted to speak directly to the WRDSB community about our commitment to the safety of all those in the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB).

“I want to be clear – All students, families and community members have the right to feel safe at school and at work. These types of actions will not be tolerated here,” said Director chanicka. “Our focus remains on making WRDSB a place where human rights are upheld, and where all feel welcome and safe.”

If you have specific concerns about your child, please reach out to their teacher or principal to discuss available support in the WRDSB and community. If parents, caregivers or families are worried about their child’s mental health or safety, or that of someone else, please ask for help from a healthcare professional.
